2 Days, two cusTom pens made

Short story of how to create two pens from ebonite. They will be Goldfink model 38 pens – a medium size piston filler, cap diameter 15.4 mm, barrel diameter 14.2 mm. Nib size is a no. 6. As I am using ebonite feeds, any type of nib can be fit… Vintage nibs or modern nibs.

Two rods of ebonite made in Germany, all the components cut to outer diameter, and bored.

Piston inserted and inside diameters bored, all the diameters inside and outside cut, ready for threading.

All the threads are cut, a triple start thread for the cap, and single start threads for section, piston and cap top. .. Now its time for some shaping.

Shaping done, cap tops are still a little high, to be corrected. Remains the section to shape, but that will be done in the end, after inserting the feed and nib.

Cap rings to later shrink fit are cut, adapted to precise diameter and gold plated. They are wide 0.9 mm, thick 0.3 mm – from a soft alloy that is good to shrink fit. Two versions of cap top inserts chosen, one ring cut from a mother of pearl coin, and a solid silver coin, engraved with the letter T – from a medieval “Schreibmeister”s alfabeth.

Next day, the pens have been sanded, and polished, the captops were set into the cap top the evening before.
Now the always frightening part, cut the grooves for the cap rings.

Three tiny cap bands will be fit into these grooves.

Feed and nib are fit, sections are shaped, rings are fit. More polishing needed.

Two versions of the cap top insert, the MOP logo and the silver T coin.

After testing and final polishing, the final details to add, the knurlings to the piston knobs..

And then find the best nib to fit.
